Ride by the Lake - Wivenhoe Wrap-Up!

The weather gods must have listened to our prayers, as the day could not have been more perfect for our second annual Ride by the Lake Demo Day out at Lake Wivenhoe on Sunday, May 15th.

The atmosphere created with over 40 bikes on demo and more than 450 people throughout the picture perfect day was sensational!

All the TeamMoto staff involved did a great job organising over 550 test rides throughout the day to ensure customers had a positive and happy experience.

We even had a few manufacturer representatives who worked tirelessly to ensure all the customers had a fantastic time - so a big thank you to Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph for supplying demo bikes for the customers to experience.  Yamaha also brought up their transporter which added great atmosphere to the day!

We had excellent catering with the Triumph Springwood crew slaving over a hot BBQ all day and smooth registration with Cristy, Kristy and Rosie ensuring everyone got to ride their chosen bikes.

In the end it all comes down to ensuring that everyone who attended had a good time and some of the feedback from customers has been fantastic.

At TeamMoto we are all about making the most of your ride and living the lifestyle you choose and hopefully our Ride by the Lake Demo Day opened some eyes to the possibility of a new bike or a new dream.

So thank you to everyone who came out and made the day such a success!  Below is some of the fantastic feedback we have received from customers...

Hi Rosie, I just wanted to say a big thank you to yourself and Team Moto for organising such a fantastic day.

I am already a Team Moto Moorooka customer after purchasing my Yamaha FZ6R from Konrad in April, but I shall definately be purchasing my non-LAMS bike from Team Moto once I am on my open licence.

A truly awesome day out, and judging by the smiles on everyones faces I can guarantee it was a huge success. Well done! Once again, thank you :)  -  Kind regards, Damian Zuvich

Thank you so much for a great day at Lake Wivenhoe, my wife Judy and I really enjoyed the rides (very organised) and wasn’t the day beautiful. With best regards, Ray Edwards

Just a note to thank you for a well organised and run day. I enjoyed the experience and when I get back to Tassie I will mention the event to the Hobart Branch of the Ulyssees club and you may end up with a few more blow ins from down south for next year's event. - Cheers, Gilbert Griffiths

Hi Rosie, Thank you to you and all involved with organising yesterday's ride day. Although the "Stone Gods" prevented me from testing the VFR1200 again (for the second year,) the ride you hastily arranged for me on the Speed Triple was greatly appreciated.

The Speed Triple was a revelation and exceeded my expectations. It is a significant improvement in the areas that that were of concern to me in the previous model so it is now in my sights as a potential addition to my garage. - Regards, Robert Giampietro

Thanks for a great ride on Sunday morning. We really enjoyed ourselves, and enjoyed the W800. Riding it is much more educational than just reading about it.

We won't rush out to buy one in the next ten years, but there will no doubt be other reasons to visit Team Moto in the short term. See you, and thanks for the very well organised day. Everything was perfect. - John & Lynne Ingen-Housz

Hi Rosie, Just want to congratulate you and your Team Moto colleagues on the fantastic operation you put on yesterday, Well Done!!

Well organized, and a great opportunity to test ride models on a real road, and under normal conditions... My wife and I were proud to be a part of the programme, and gave us an example of what its like riding models we had been wondering about.

I'm aware of the enormous amount of organizing, costs and risks involved in such a day, and hope you had some good results in sales. You certainly did in regards of promoting your Team Moto name and products range! Again, Well done, Great job! Regards, Paul and Marion Eddison, Sunshine Coast.

Facing-the-Demons

Facing your Motorcycle Demons...

By Helena Folscher

When people say you have to face your demons it usually involves one or two difficult things. I never thought I would face all my motorbike demons in one weekend, but that's just what happened.  We planned a week-end ride from Brisbane to Yamba, from there to Warwick and then back to Brisbane again.

After all the rain we had, the prediction was for a relatively clear day on Saturday, yeah sure.

As we started out we had a fairly strong head on wind and this was the first time I had to deal with trying to stay on top of the bike and going forward without slacking down or crashing.

Next problem: I didn't want to ride in the rain.  I didn't feel confident enough and wasn't sure what I was to do with the water on my visor.  Well, guess what, it did rain.  We stopped, put on our rain-suits and...
I made it.  It wasn't so bad.

The droplets flew off my helmet visor and I remembered that my following distance should increase.  It is scary at first but if you remain vigilant, it helps. I just wish some other road users would keep their distance in the wet weather, it’s very scary if they're too close.
HelenaFolscher-main
The rest of the first day didn't go too bad, except that by days end I wasn't sure if I had a behind left or not.

We took a lot of breaks on the road, about every 50 km or so, and that helped a lot.  We arrived in Yamba fairly early so could still stop and take a walk to the beach.  The waves were pretty good because of a storm at sea and the surfers made the most of it.

Day two started out beautiful and sunny.  ‘Yes! No rain’, I thought.  The scenery was absolutely beautiful and it wasn't too cold.  We were sure to have a good ride.  We decided to have brekkie in Grafton, but was too early for anything except Macca’s, and thought of eating at a local place.  So we pushed on.  Big mistake.

About 35 km outside of Casino my bike dies on me.

I was supposed to turn the lever to reserve but at 100 km/ hour it is impossible to find.  So I pulled to the side of the road and tried to get the lever on reserve, and of course didn't see the arrow showing the way.  Eventually I got it turned and got the bike fired again!

We then ended up at McDonalds in Casino in any case. The scenery between Casino and Kyogle is really beautiful.  Unfortunately,  I could also see where the floods had been. Some park areas are still underwater.

I thought that the petrol problem was that, but it was not to be.  Dearest husband has decided that we was to see the back roads of Northern NSW.  Big mistake.

Don't ever go on the road between Woodenbong and Killarney on a cruiser.

This was the next demon to face: potholes.
Pothole_Big
At Q-Ride we had heard to stay clear of potholes, they damage lots of things on your bike.

I forgot to ask about a road like this one.  This was a case of which pothole to choose and not get thrown off. I decided to treat this as if I was on a dirt bike or on a horse.  Suddenly my thigh muscles had gotten a job. Well, you can choose to laugh or cry.  I chose to laugh, what can you do.

Luckily that was the only bad things to happen to me on Sunday.  We arrived in Warwick in one piece and again I was searching for my behind, which was probably left somewhere on the road outside of Woodenbong.  That evening we also did a night ride to get something to eat, so another milestone was reached.
Monday, arrived a bit cooler than the other days.  I had forgotten to pack warmly, so about half an hour outside of Warwick I couldn't feel my fingers or toes anymore.

We ended up in roadworks on the Cunningham Highway, right in the pass.  I was very happy about that because we had driven through here before and I was a bit nervous about doing this on a bike.

The rest of the morning went very well and we took a smaller road through Boonah to Beaudesert.  This must be the best kept secret ever.  This is such a smooth ride with hardly any traffic, I couldn't help myself, and pushed my baby a bit. Wow, how lovely.  You feel so free.

The plan was for us to stop over in Cunangra.  That was an eye opener.  Usually you don't see a lot of girls on the road.  What a nice surprise to find a lot of ladies who share the same passion.  They come from all walks of life and any age, this was good to see as well.  That means, this can be a lifelong hobby, not just when you're young.

We came back late afternoon and I had an awesome time.  It really is the best way of seeing the countryside. Next time, I will stick to the main roads though, me, I don't like potholes.

Finding-your-dream

I'm going to find my bike; I'm going to find my dream.

By Metz Ronan, Honda Springwood Business Manager

With the way the world’s turning these days, you can be forgiven for thinking that “finance” and “loan” are dirty words. Before starting at TeamMoto as a Business Manager I was working in the retail department in motorcycle finance for a company that’s been through more owners and owned by more banks than you can change your underwear in a week. I somehow survived the global financial crisis with a job intact, and gained a unique perspective on how things work over the other side of the fence.

Working alongside of TeamMoto over the years gave me the opportunity to slip into the role of a Business Manager when I moved up here at the start of the year.

After spending years stuck on the phone in Sydney, it’s been both a challenging and refreshing change to be able to actually talk to people face-to-face. Working for the finance company, all the clients were lost in application numbers and profiles; but here I am being constantly surprised and even humbled every day by customers and their stories.

Enter stage left, with Veronica.
Veronica-1
Veronica came in and saw us just over a week ago with a goal set on her mind and a desire in her heart to get back on a motorcycle.

She grew up both around bikes and on them, and gave it up for the family life with a beautiful little girl by the name of Sahara. She described herself as feeling frustrated for a long time, missing the freedom, meeting new people, and just getting out there and riding.

“I felt frustrated, and I felt lost. And when people at my work were telling me about their adventures on their bikes it just made me even more frustrated because I missed that feeling... just the feeling of being free on a bike.

And so I made up my mind, and I said to my husband one night, that I’m going to go find my bike. I was going to go find my dream.”

When that was the answer that met my question of “so what spurred on your decision to get back on a bike?” I can safely say I think my heart stopped a couple of times.

Pete, our hyperactive and charismatic sales hero found her dream by the way of a Honda VT750, a big beautiful black ride that he popped some pipes on to really make it roar.
We believed in Veronica’s dream as much as she did, and worked around the clock to help her achieve it.

Our finance systems had her application submitted and approved in under 24hrs, and when I told the manager of the finance company’s settlements department about Veronica’s story, she stayed back after hours to process the deal to ensure we’d be able to deliver the bike on the weekend.

Our pocket-sized accessories guru Lucy made sure Veronica was kitted out and ready to go, and our workshop champion Phil placed her pipes as a priority to make sure she could get out and enjoy her weekend on her new ride.

It felt great working as a team across the departments to come together to achieve such an outcome, and seeing Veronica get onto her brand new bike with the biggest smile on her face was like watching someone come home after so long away.
Open-Road
Its stories like that and people like Veronica that are the reason I love doing what I do. Especially from a female rider’s perspective (as a fellow lady myself) that the process could work so fluidly and be so empowering and life changing is the true testament to why we all do what we do here.

To be a part of that process and to have been a part of that story is just the ultimate compliment to the work I do. Veronica said it best, that to ride a motorcycle is “just the feeling of being free, meeting new people, and every day being an adventure.” And doesn’t that just sum up what it’s all about?

To get on your new motorcycle for the first time; that feeling of exhilaration and freedom, to effectively take life by the handlebars and ride- there is no other feeling in the world quite like it (can I get an amen?). We all work together to bring riders young and old, new and experienced into this community, and there are stories like Veronica’s happening every day, everywhere, and we help make these dreams manifest.
And speaking of community… for any other ladies out there looking for that same kind of adventure, we here are TeamMoto are looking at putting together some Ladies nights and ride days specifically for women in the  upcoming months.

So if you’re looking for some adventure and meeting like-minded ladies who love motorcycles as much as we do, stay tuned to the newsletter for more details!

The Southern Crossing: True Blue Aussie Adventure!

On May 15th, 2011, three everyday Aussie's started on a challenge of a lifetime - to ride across Australia from the easternmost point to the most westerly in practically a straight line.  Leroy, Geordie and Jon set out several days ago on this adventure aboard Yamaha XT660Z Tenere's which they purchased from TeamMoto Enoggera.

The Southern Crossing is set to be an adventure of true Australian spirit and unrivalled determination with over 98% of the planned route consisting of dirt, sand, rock and mud - not to mention the 1500 large sand hills in the Simpson desert which they will traverse!
Facing some incredible challenges and unkown dangers, these three adventurers will live out a two wheel dream to cross Australia in virtually a straight line - which is a world first.

They will do battle with the unpredictable weather, whilst enjoying some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.

“I have been planning this trip in my mind ever since I saw footage of the Leyland Brothers crossing our continent in a Land Rover in 1966. We chose the Ténérés because they are the ideal motorcycle for this overland trip. We needed something rugged and reliable with enough power to get us up and over the dunes. But light enough to lift out of sections if we get bogged,” says project leader Leroy Robinson.

Leaving Byron Bay on May 15th, Leroy, Geordie and Jon will complete their epic Journey on June 25th at the Overlander Roadhouse in Western Australia.

The Southern Crossing has a fantastic website with blogging and pictures posted after each day - http://thesoutherncrossing.webs.com/ - so if you are interested in following their journey across the country be sure to visit their website and show your support.

APC Rally: The Tiger assault prepares!

14 days.  7,500km.  Forest.  Snow.  Desert.  Adventure!

On the 23rd of July 2011, Michael Oliver and his Tiger 800 XC will embark on the Australian Property Centre Rally which is set to be the longest, toughest adventure bike rally that this country has seen.

Described as the Australian version of the legendary Dakar rally, this non-competition rally covers 7,563km with only 300km on the bitumen!
This event has the unique features that will test riders to their limits for fourteen days straight.  Riders need to carry survival gear and camping gear that can withstand a tumultuous array of terrain including snow, deserts and rainforests.

Riders will use GPS units to navigate the course and all shall be carrying satellite tracking devices which help provide a safety net.  The tracking devices allow the public to see where the riders are and they can use Google Earth to see the dunes or rivers that the riders will be traversing.

Michael, who is the Dealer Principal of TeamMoto Virginia when he is not roaming the countryside aboard his Tiger, will embark on this adventure alongside Steve Chiodo, who is the Australian importer for Triumph Motorcycles.  Michael & Steve will both be mounted on the brand new Triumph Tiger 800 XC's and will be completing the rally as a team.

They will be travelling the 7500km through five different states (QLD, ACT, NSW, SA and VIC), starting each day at 7.00am and finishing at 5.30pm. The route has been designed to test riders abilities, endurance and aptitude.  The route shall be crossing the Simpson Desert, which is one of the largest in the world, as well as the Victorian Alps where there will be snow and extreme temperatures.

The route will be following the Great Dividing range from Mt Hotham in Victoria to Woodenbong in Queensland.  This is nearly 1000km of rainforests and dry eucalypt forests where adventure bikes will be really tested.

A huge amount of time and effort has been put into the event by the organisers, who have been putting together sections of this track for ten years!  To make it easier for riders to compete in the event, there will be seven starting and finishing points on the course.  The course is a big loop so riders will start and finish at the same point, ensuring all riders cover the same distance.

If you are interested in more information on the APC Rally and if this sounds like your sort of adventure, be sure to visit http://www.australianpropertycentre.net.au/rally.php for more information!

Michael and Steve will be keeping us informed of their adventures throughout the 14 days, so be sure to stay tuned to our TeamMoto Facebook page for up-to-date info on their progress!

2012-KX450F-main

Kawasaki launches the new 2012 KX450F... in more ways than one!

Kawasaki is pleased to reveal information and images for the all new and highly anticipated 2012 Kawasaki KX450F.

A Championship winning model already as proven by Ryan Villopoto in the 2011 AMA SX series - which will go down as one of the best SX series of all time - the 2012 Kawasaki KX450F model is not resting on its laurels.
With many new additions to the new model being announced today including adjustable foot-peg and handle-bar positioning, a slimmer rider interface and the world’s first production use of Launch Control on a motocross bike, the KX450F doesn’t look like it’s ready to relinquish its winning status anytime soon.

Just sitting on the new 2012 model reveals that it’s an all new bike.

The slimmer new frame (4mm slimmer over its predecessor), new minimalist bodywork and a flatter tank-seat line offer a noticeably slimmer riding position and improved ergonomics.

A choice of four different handlebar positions and two different foot-peg positions allows the rider to tailor the new bike to their riding position. Already one can see that this is a noticeably different motorcycle, and it hasn’t even been started yet.
2012-KX450F-680w
Kick it over and the new ECU does a masterful job of communicating with the KX but not without your input.

Using the supplied DFI couplers, riders can quickly and easily access their choice of three maps (standard, hard or soft) according to track conditions.

But perhaps the most exciting addition to the all new 2012 Kawasaki KX450F is the world’s first production use of Launch Control on an MX bike.
2012_KX450F_Launch_Control
Activated by the push of a handlebar mounted button, the Launch Control system, similar to that on the factory Kawasaki racers, activates a separate engine map designed to ensure efficient race starts in slippery conditions.

(The Launch Control Mode map retards ignition timing, allowing tyres to gain grip in low-traction situations, and allowing riders to focus on their lines.)

Once the rider shifts into 3rd gear, the system is automatically disengaged, switching back to the normal engine map.

Other new features on the 2012 KX450F include a new Uni-Trak rear suspension, new factory-inspired tuning, new front Petal brake disc, narrower front tyre and lower centre of gravity, revised transmission for smoother shifting, new factory styling and more.
The all new 2012 KX450F enforces Kawasaki’s commitment to producing race motorcycles that offers an edge over the competition.  For more information on this exciting new Kawasaki model, click here to contact your local TeamMoto Kawasaki dealership.  The 2012 KX450F is expected to be available in Australia in the second half of 2011.

ContourGPS: Adding a new dimension to video...

The new ContourGPS Helmet Camera takes your helmet cam experience to a whole new level.  Not only does it capture glorious 1080p video while utilising a 135' wide-angle rotating lens, but it now tracks your location, speed and alititude while recording via the built in GPS receiver.

Weighing in at only 147grams, the new ContourGPS adds a new dimension to your video with new mapping technology, as well as boasting the ability to turn your iPhone into a wireless viewfinder!

As mentioned, the latest feature for this new GPS version Contour camera is the built in GPS receiver that tracks your location, speed and alititude while also recording.

With a low profile design the camera is extremely light, making it one of the smallest and lightest combination cameras boasting hands free design and GPS.  It's also extremely easy to operate and use; simply slide a single oversized switch located on the top of the camera forward to start recording (which is easy even with gloves on!).  In addition the camera has a rotating lens and two lasers which assist when mounting and lining up your shot.

Another interesting aspect of the ContourGPS is the lack of protective casing: it doesn't need it.  Whether your out in the rain, hail or shine, the Contour GPS stands up to the harsh outdoors without the need for an external plastic case.

Camera-680w

Another great new feature for the Contour is the built-in Bluetooth and Contour iPhone app to turn your phone into a wireless viewfinder.  Available on the Apple IOS platform, ContourGPS enables your iPhone or iPod Touch to line up your shot and change your settings in real time.

The Mobile App gives you a preview screen in the palm of your hand - to see what your camera sees before you begin recording.  You can also change the settings including video mode, adjust your microphone volume, change your lighting conditions or configure your GPS all through your iPhone when it is connected.

The Contour GPS also comes with the Storyteller application which allows you to download the videos from your camera to your computer with ease.  As well as featuring editing options, you can watch your route whether you ride on or off-road, while interacting between the map and video player to fast forward to your favourite parts.

The ContourGPS is now available for $499RRP to order from our from TeamMoto Motorcycle Superstore online store.  So be sure to ring (07) 3442 1380 to put your order in now!

Motorcycle Riding School: Interesting Statistics

Humans seem to be fascinated by crazy, ridiculous facts and statistics that have very little or no affect on our day-to-day life.

For example, did you know that 27% of female lottery winners hide their winning ticket in their bras? Or that a 2007 study revealed that there are an average of 54.58 milk chocolate M&M’s in each 48g packet? (http://joshmadison.com/2007/12/02/mms-color-distribution-analysis/)

How about that red motorcycles go 3.4% faster because of the lower co-efficient of drag of red paint? Read on and I’ll explain that one later.
I think it’s just one way that we humans entertain ourselves. But we end up filling our life and our minds with trivial stuff and often overlook the really important things.

So here’s one interesting fact that is important, and does affect us all:

Road trauma in Australia costs us 17 billion dollars per year (University of Queensland report, June 2006) - that’s around $750 per year for every man, woman and child in the country, or about $1,500 for every taxpayer.

Now, I can think of plenty of things I could do with $1,500 – a new Shoei helmet and a couple of tyres, or even a few track days! And I’d rather do that than be paying (which we do) for other people’s crash damage.

It’s something to think about. And a good mate of mine, Russell White, did think - and he decided to do something about it.
MRS-FatalityFree
Russell started a campaign to bring attention to the effects of road trauma on our country, and set aside one day a year where we all focus on being safe on the road.

It’s called “Fatality Free Friday”.

This year it happens on Friday 27th May.
The day has become an annual national event designed to focus public attention on road safety and encourage all road users to think about road trauma, and the effect it has on all of us.

The idea is that every time you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, or on a motorcycle, be mindful of safe driving and riding. Be patient with other road users, stay alert, keep speed appropriate and slow down if it's wet.

So why is this important to us motorcyclists? And why am I talking about it?

Well here’s another interesting fact …. Sadly, motorcycles are only 4-5% of the national road fleet, but around 20% of all fatalities are from motorcycle crashes. Ouch, that’s way out of balance!

So when you look at it that way, this really is important to us and we should be taking notice. And we can do something to help ourselves and our fellow riders.

We can start by accepting that as a motorcyclist we’re just a little bit more vulnerable on the roads than the average motorist. And, when it does go pear shaped out there it hurts us a lot more. So let’s take appropriate precautions, I’m talking about wearing appropriate riding gear here.

Other road users find it hard to see us as well, so can we blame them? Well, it can take the average car driver 4 - 7 seconds to identify a hazard and that includes us. So maybe we have to take that into account when dealing with traffic.

We can also realise that it’s all too easy for us to get caught up in the thrill of the ride, to get sucked in by ego and peer pressure and feel driven to go faster and harder. We end up riding beyond our limits or the limits of the environment.

Hell, I’m not saying take the fun out of the ride, I’m saying take the risk out of the ride!

And that, my friends, is the basis behind Russell’s master plan with Fatality Free Friday. Just to be aware that the risks are always there, and that it’s up to us to manage them. It’s no one else’s responsibility, it’s mine. It’s yours.
MRS-Red-Motorbike1
So I hope you’ll join us all on the 27th May in focussing on safe road use, and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same. And you can check out Russell’s website at http://www.fatalityfreefriday.com.

Now, the explanation of the red paint …… well I made that one up! Just to see who read my article through to the end. And if the sales guys start to sell more red bikes I’ll know that not many people did :)
