2018 Suzuki SV650 Available In LAMS & Full-Powered Versions
Suzuki's SV650 will be available from Australian dealerships in both learner approved and full-powered platforms for MY18 release, both are due to arrive next month carrying a manufacturer's recommended price of $10,190 ride away.
The "SV" designation in the SV650 stands for many things: Sporty V-twin, Superior Value, Simple and Versatile. Quite simply is a concept that an owner experiences rather than defining. Loaded with capabilities and exuding personality, daily commutes or weekend excursions on twisty roads are an easy and unforgettable ride.
Today's mid capacity street motorcycle market is mostly powered by parallel twins or inline four-cylinder engines. Suzuki believes its unique 645cc V-twin offers the best engine character for this type of segment thanks to the linear power it delivers throughout the rev range.
The Suzuki V-twin engine is a marvel of engineering and superb versatility. While at lower RPMs, this engine delivers powerful torque that's easy to handle and a deep throaty sound. Open the throttle to the mid-range, and the power of the engine responds linearly and smoothly, yet always under your control. Finally at higher RPMs, the V-twin cruises along with performance ready to go, even in higher gears.
The full-powered version punches out an impressive 56.0kW @8,500rpm with 64Nm of torque @8,100rpm.
In Learner Approved trim the output is lowered to 35kW @8,500 rpm with 56.5Nm of torque at 4,000rpm and is tuned to deliver strong torque in the low-to-mid rpm range whilst also conforming to the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) requirements.
The beautifully crafted trellis frame is constructed of lightweight steel material allowing an overall slimmed down appearance while proudly showcasing the robust V-twin engine.
Measuring in with a low 785mm seat height, the narrow, streamlined seat is designed to be nearly flat from front to back, giving riders a superior degree of visibility and grip in the upright position. In addition, a luggage loop is available for securing cargo.
Large 290mm dual front disc brakes and 240mm rear brake disc provide incredible stopping performance and control. Compact and lightweight, the SV650 features state-of-the-art ABS technology manufactured by Nissin, thus making it possible to further reduce vehicle weight without sacrificing performance.
Packed full of the latest Suzuki technology, such as the handy Low RPM Assist function which raises engine rpm during take-offs or when navigating slowly through city traffic. The Suzuki Easy Start System makes engine starting a breeze with just one touch of the starter button.
Both models with be available in the stunning Metallic Triton Blue / Pearl Glacier White colour schemes.

YMA has revealed an all new junior MX bike – the YZ65. The YZ65 joins Yamaha’s extensive motocross range at the entry level and offers the first step on the YZ VictorYZone ladder.
The new YZ65 was unveiled to the the public at three MX tracks on the East Coast at 10am Sydney time today – to coincide with the global reveal at the San Diego SX. Like all YZs, the new machine features the latest technology and performance features designed to win races and help riders become one with their machine – and placing them on top of the podium. With a 14in front an 12 in rear wheel, the new model is aimed at riders aged between seven and 12 years old.
Model development is focused on being easy-to-ride so entry level racers can get up to speed quickly and progress to the next stage YZ85. The 2018 YZ65 features a new 64.8cc liquid-cooled, two-stroke engine design with a case reed-valve intake and a mechanical Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS). Designed for performance and ease of use, the YZ65’s allnew engine also offers unparalleled durability and reliability.
Yamaha Power Valve System
Patented YPVS™ combines crisp bottom-end torque with potent midrange and free-revving top-end, making the most of the compact engine and lightweight chassis.
Veteran engineers with over 40 years of technical knowledge — built up since the introduction of the first YZ250 in 1973 — put their know-how to work using Yamaha’s trademark YPVS system. This is the biggest contributor to the bike’s easy-to-use torque. A slitshaped valve on the side of the exhaust port operates in response to engine rpm, moving the valve upward or downward at the top part of the exhaust port to open or close. The YZ65 uses the valve control governor proven on the YZ125 and YZ250, providing effective exhaust
Timing throughout the entire rev range, from low to high rpm. This delivers responsive acceleration and excellent throttle control. The intake and exhaust systems have been designed with special attention to the pulses that occur during the combustion flow - intake, mixture, combustion, exhaust and silencing - to contribute to explosive but easy-tousepower. In particular, the fine-tuned shape of the air cleaner box, the shape of the reed valve - both sides were carefully examined - and an expansion chamber with plenty of volume are all prime contributors. The short exhaust complies with FIM/AMA regulations and still produces the rippling sound unique to a two-stroke.
To achieve both a high primary compression ratio and optimal inertial mass for the crankshaft, a resin weight is incorporated into the crank web. This resin balancer maintains the balance between volume and mass, giving the bike a feeling of instant power delivery while reducing the vibration felt while riding. The newly designed, lightweight connecting rod, lightweight piston and optimised crankshaft balance also help the engine dissipate vibration.
This super competitive engine is matched to a six speed transmission with ratios that optimise power output. Clutch plates and spring load have been designed for a super light clutch pull enabling enhanced machine control.
A newly-designed semi double-cradle steel frame, removable aluminium subframe and aluminum swing-arm provide a nimble feel and confident handling. The ergonomics feature a flat, comfortable seat and four position adjustable aluminium tapered handlebars, to provide comfort and ease of movement for a wide range of rider builds and sizes.
All new 2-stroke engine
The 65cc two-stroke powerplant is all new for the YZ65, and features the same advanced technologies found in Yamaha’s race-winning YZ125 and YZ250 motocrossers.
Compact steel frame
Designed around the rigidity balance required for the 65cc class, this new frame delivers excellent grip feeling even across bumpy track surfaces, jump landings and whoop sections.
The chassis is designed to feel stable while riding over bumps, to have good feel and feedback from the ground, to bring consistent lap times and have stability while in the air. The YZ65 adopts a race proven USD front fork from KYB with 36mm inner tubes to ensure a planted feeling when entering corners and excellent shock absorption when, going over bumps.
The specially machined one-piece outer tubes are made of aluminium alloy for excellent rigidity and front-end feel. The front suspension has 215mm of travel and is adjustable for compression (12 levels) and rebound (10 levels) damping. The fork spacing is the same as the 2018 model YZ85 at 175mm. Combined with the lightweight aluminium steering stem, this front suspension offers supreme handling with a light and stable feel but also a solid connection to the ground.
The rear combines a newly designed Monocross suspension with an aluminum swingarm. The rear suspension has a smooth damping feel designed not to bottom out and helps deliver the machine's stable and planted sensation when absorbing shocks. There are 10 levels of adjustment for compression and rebound damping.
The swingarm's rigidity balance is tuned for the frame and helps give the bike its light handling feel and easy lean-in characteristics. Its high rigidity and balance with the frame are major contributors to the bike's excellent off-road performance. Also, the swingarm end's shape was designed for easy maintenance. The resin chain guard is not only light, but is also designed to be compact enough not to get caught up in ruts that the small-sized wheel will travel through.
The handlebar crown is made of strong, lightweight cast aluminium while the tapered handlebars are also aluminium. The handlebar position can be adjusted for four levels from front to back in order to match a child's growth by changing the bar clamp's orientation and mounting location. The maximum range of adjustability is 27 mm (Forward: 10 mm / Backward:7 mm or a further 10 mm for 17 mm).
The newly designed seat's shape and fit makes it easy for the rider to shift their weight forward and backward. With an eye on easier maintenance, just a single bolt on top is required to remove it. In addition, for ease of use, the bolt is located under the seat cushioning.
All new suspension
Up front, a 36mm KYB® fork offers unmatched compliance with settings based on Yamaha’s extensive racing experience. Out back, a new link-less shock design is light and compact to suit the needs of 65cc-class riders, and acts through a new swingarm with YZ125-style chain adjusters. Both front and rear suspension systems are tunable for both rebound and compression damping.
Other cool featrures include YZ450F inspired graphics that are integral with the body panels for a shared YZ family look. This is underlined by the same coloured blue rims front and rear and gold-coloured chain.
"We have had ongoing communication throughout testing and development of the YZ65 and believe it will more than competitive with anything currently available in the class. Test riders in the US are extremely confident of the bike's performance and reliability as it has exceeded Yamaha's industry leading standards in performance, handling and durability."
"We look forward to adding this bike to our arsenal of YZ weapons in 2018 and starting our YJR development program with riders at an even younger age. We are excited to campaign the YZ65 and believe it will be an immediate success on and off the track" says YMA Junior Race Team Manager Scott Bishop.

Kawasaki makes its long-awaited entry into the retro category with the all-new Z900RS Cafe. Conceived as an homage to the legendary Z1,it is powered by a liquid-cooled 900cc-class In-Line Four an engine choice that makes the Z900RS Cafe unique in this category. The newest Z is a synthesis of the traditional and the modern. An engine with a traditional In-Line Four configuration is backed by Kawasaki's latest rider support technology, the engine and frame design both benefit from the latest in advanced analysis technology, and carefully crafted styling elements are complemented by high-tech features like LED lighting and digital instrumentation. Great pains were taken to achieve the Z900RS Cafe racer styling look and feel, with each component meticulously selected and every setting carefully considered.
A synchronous ride feel combines the smooth response of an In-Line Four tuned for low-mid range torque, a deep rumbling exhaust note crafted to deliver additional rider enjoyment, and neutral handling that enables both leisurely and sporty riding. This is complemented by timeless looks that blend Z1-inspired styling with modern technology and craftsmanship techniques, and an attention to detail and high level of fit-and-finish to rival that of the Z1 itself. For riders searching for a bike with character and a rich history, the Z900RS Cafe offers both in abundance, while providing an opportunity to slow down, look around and enjoy the simple things that life can bring.
Introductory price of $18,299* available from TeamMoto Kawasaki dealers
Like the Z1, the Z900RS Cafe features a 900cc-class In-Line Four an engine configuration that inherently offers a great balance of power and manageability. Tuning focuses on the low-mid range. Revs build in a measured, but very determined manner, giving the rider a sense of connectedness between the throttle and rear wheel.
KTRC (KAWASAKI TRACTION CONTROL)
Contributing to rider reassurance, the Z900RS Cafe is equipped with advanced Kawasaki rider support technology. KTRC features two modes that cover a wide range of riding conditions, offering either enhanced sport riding performance or the peace of mind to negotiate slippery surfaces with confidence. Riders can choose from two modes. Mode 1 prioritises maximum forward acceleration. Mode 2 provides rider reassurance by facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces. Riders may also elect to turn the system off.
KAWASAKI'S FIRST TUNED EXHAUST NOTE
While Kawasaki In-Line Four engines are historically renowned for their great-sounding exhausts, this the first time that Kawasaki has conducted sound research to craft a model's ideal exhaust note. Designed to elicit rider response, the sound tuning focused on the engine's initial roar to life, idling and low-speed riding where the rider is best able to enjoy the exhaust's deep rumble.
ASSIST & SLIPPER CLUTCH
Assist & Slipper Clutch uses two types of cams (an assist cam and a slipper cam), offering two functions not available on a standard clutch. When the engine is operating at normal rpm the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch. When excessive engine braking occurs – as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) – the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre from hopping and skidding.
HORIZONTAL BACK-LINK REAR SUSPENSION
Unlike the twin rear shocks of the Z1, the Z900RS Cafe features Kawasaki’s Horizontal Back-Link rear suspension. This choice of modern suspension (also featured on Kawasaki’s supersport and super-rnaked models) offers a higher level of sporty riding potential – something that Kawasaki engineers were not willing to sacrifice. Like the fork, the linked rear suspension delivers a balance of ride comfort and sporty performance. The rear shock features stepless rebound damping and stepless preload adjustability.
LIGHTWEIGHT TRELLIS FRAME
Complementing a light overall weight (noticeable as soon as the bike is lifted off its side-stand), frame rigidity and chassis geometry tuning were selected to deliver light, natural handling. Like the engine, the chassis responds to rider input predictably, going where the rider wants it to without resistance. In keeping with its retro sport model character, the Z900RS Cafe stance is slight more forward-leaning than the Z900RS, and it features a black drop-style handlebars design. A product of Kawasaki’s advanced analysis technology, the frame had to be completely redesigned to accommodate the slim teardrop fuel tank and offer a handling character optimal for enjoyable riding at a more measured pace.
INVERTED FRONT FORKS
41 mm inverted front fork contributes to excellent ride comfort and sporty riding potential. Response is unhurried, offering reassuring handling in riding situations ranging from in-town to winding roads. The high-grade fork features compression (10-way) and rebound (12-way) damping adjustability as well as stepless preload adjustability, enabling precise settings to suit rider preference and riding style.
